MD, professor, School of Medicine, associate chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and director of the Psychosocial Treatment Laboratory - all at Stanford University, Dr. David Spiegel runs the Center on Stress and Health pursuing its mission to study interrelationships among the social environment, mind, brain and body in order to understand how stress and support can influence health.
The research, conducted by the members of Dr. Spiegel's faculty and staff, has resulted in twelve books and some 400 scientific journal articles and textbook chapters. Dr. Spiegel's books are available below.
Professor Spiegel is a leader in the field of psychosomatic research, treatment and development with particular interest in the field of psychoneuroendocrinology/oncology. Since beginning research on the effects of support groups for women with metastatic breast cancer in 1976, Dr. Spiegel has conducted numerous studies showing that group psychotherapeutic interventions have positive effects on mood disturbance, coping and pain among these patients.
