Simone Awhina is a singer and sound healer from The Netherlands. Her father is a very talented trumpet player, so music was an integral part of daily life in her childhood.
As a little girl of two, she would watch the opera "Carmen" intently and try to sing along. On her tenth birthday, an aunt gave her a tape of Elvis which she would listen to for hours, particularly the song "My Boy" which touched her very deeply. Being very shy, she just sang along with the radio when nobody could hear her. At that time, horses were very important so that was were she dedicated most of her time. At the age of seventeen she met a man, Nico and fell in love. Together, they decided to move to New Zealand in 1993 to start a new life operating a flower-growing business and an import/wholesale business with gifts and furniture.
After five wonderful years in New Zealand, Nico died of a brain tumor in 1998. During his illness, Simone would sing "You're My Everything" to him, by Rene Froger. His heartbeat slowed down and you could see him relax. After his death, Simone's world was shattered. It was in this difficult time that music and singing became very important again and through singing, was able to heal this life changing experience.
In April 2000, Simone moved back to the Netherlands and this is where her musical journey really started. Still feeling very shy and conscious about her voice, she had to overcome many fears to perform for an audience. After entering many talent competitions, with success in the Dutch Championships of Performing Arts in Hengelo, to her amazement, was selected to represent The Netherlands at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood in 2001, where she won a gold and two bronze medals.
Simone is also a Sound Healer.
More and more researchers discover the healing powers of sound. Consider this...
At Helen Keller Hospital in Alabama, an experiment with fifty nine newborns found that 94 percent of crying babies immediately fell asleep without a bottle or pacifier when exposed to music.
After installing a music listening system in its six-bed intensive care unit in 1976, Saint Joseph Hospital in New York reported a drop in heart attacks and a death rate 8 to 12 percent below the national average.
It has been proven that music and sound:
• slow down and equalize brain waves.
• affect respiration, heartbeat, pulse rate, and blood pressure.
• reduce muscle tension and improves body movement.
• affect body temperature.
• increase endorphin levels.
• regulate stress-related hormones.
• boost the immune function.
